Antimicrobial Drug Resistance in Corynebacterium diphtheriae mitis

2010 had distinct random amplifi ed patterns that differed from those generated from isolates A–G (Figure). A previous study in Taiwan showed that the incidence (no. cases/100,000 inpatients and outpatients) of all pulmonary disease caused by NTM increased signifi cantly from 2.7 (1.26) in 2000 to 10.2 (7.94) in 2008 (6). The most common organism in localized pulmonary infection and disseminate...

Antimicrobial resistance among Brazilian Corynebacterium diphtheriae strains.

The increasing problems with multidrug resistance in relation to Corynebacterium, including C. diphtheriae, are examples of challenges confronting many countries. For this reason, Brazilian C. diphtheriae strains were evaluated by the E-Test for their susceptibility to nine antibacterial drugs used in therapy. Resistance (MIC < 0.002; 0.38 microg/ml) to penicillin G was found in 14.8% of the st...

Emergence of related nontoxigenic Corynebacterium diphtheriae biotype mitis strains in Western Europe.

We report on 17 isolates of Corynebacterium diphtheriae biotype mitis with related ribotypes from Switzerland, Germany, and France. Isolates came from skin and subcutaneous infections of injecting drug users, homeless persons, prisoners, and elderly orthopedic patients with joint prostheses or primary joint infections. Such isolates had only been observed in Switzerland.

Toxinogeny in Corynebacterium diphtheriae.

In 1951, Freeman made the remarkable discovery that nontoxinogenic Corynebacterium diphtheriae became toxinogenic2 after association with the lytic phage B, previously described by Toshach (1950). From lysates of nontoxinogenic, nonlysogenic C. diphtheriae, Freeman and Morse (1951) established, through the isolation of single cells, lysogenic strains which were toxinogenic. The lysogenic clones...

Complete Closed Genome Sequence of Nontoxigenic Invasive Corynebacterium diphtheriae bv. mitis Strain ISS 3319

The genome sequence of the human pathogen Corynebacterium diphtheriae bv. mitis strain ISS 3319 was determined and closed in this study. The genome is estimated to have 2,404,936 bp encoding 2,257 proteins. This strain also possesses a plasmid of 1,960 bp.
